ramana maharshi teachings
The state we call realization is simply being oneself, not knowing anything or becoming anything. Sri Bhagavan would turn to the devotee, his eyes fixed upon him with blazing intentness. In the light of the life and teachings of Sri Ramana Maharshi, the devotees of Arunachala Ashrama believe that spiritual practice (sadhana) is essential. Therefore, thought is the nature of mind. To the extent we behave with humility, to that extent good will result. Such suffering is apparent, seems real to the onlooker, but not felt by the jnani, for he has already transcended the mistaken identity of the Self with the body. If the mind becomes still, one may live anywhere. Letting the mind go out of the Heart is known as “externalisation”. That which ‘Is’ is peace. Professor Venkatramiah records in his diary that he said to Mrs. Piggott, an English visitor, “Realization is the result of the Guru’s Grace more than of teachings, lectures, meditations, etc. Freewill and destiny are ever existent. They held me in a sort of vibration distinctly audible to me.” Always it was followed by the feeling, the indubitable conviction, that one had been taken up by Sri Bhagavan, that henceforth he was in charge, he was guiding. The Grace of the Guru is always present, but this Grace is only fully experienced by those few sincere sadhakas (spiritual aspirants) who devote their lives to the practice of the teachings. Apart from thoughts, there is no such thing as mind. If you can do it in the forest, why not at home? If the body is not there, but only the Self, the question of its disappearing in any form does not arise. If this truth is understood who will not give to others? But the initiation by look was a very real thing. Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu 606 603 In Talks with Sri Ramana Maharshi 80 we read “Let him find out to whom are the thoughts. The mind is a wondrous power residing in the Self. 1451 Clarence Rd. For all thoughts the source is the ‘I’ thought. Bh. If we become obsessed with this one thing – realizing Truth   —   Truth, a physical Guru (if necessary) and all else will be drawn to us automatically. But the mental obstacles will still be there. The cause for love is only happiness. (This analogy is based on a traditional story of a man who sees a rope at twilight and mistaking it for a serpent is afraid without cause.) If the mind is controlled through other means, it will appear to be controlled, but will rise again. Sometimes it was given in a dream, as with Natesa Mudaliar. One devotee has described it: “Suddenly Bhagavan turned his luminous, transparent eyes on me. They even increase in the new surroundings. Both methods lead to the same goal. If he were a stranger whom you were awaiting he would be bound to disappear also. Nova-Scotia@ashrama.org Some jnanis may appear to suffer, others may be in samadhi; still others may disappear from sight before death. Existence or Consciousness is the only reality. The mind always exists only by depending on something gross (physical body); it cannot exist independently. When it remains in the Heart names and forms disappear… If the mind remains in the Heart, the ‘I’ or the ego which is the source of all thoughts will go, and the Self, the Real, Eternal ‘I’ alone will shine. Not letting the mind go out, but retaining it in the Heart is what is called “inwardness”. Where from do they arise? Peace is our real nature. But jnana transcends both. What would be the use of a transient being like that? (R.R.#1) ‘Who Am I?’ I am pure Awareness. That is called “Silence”. For obtaining such knowledge the enquiry, ‘Who am I?’ in quest of the Self is the best means. Every living being longs to be happy, untainted by sorrow; and everyone has the greatest love for himself, which is solely due to the fact that happiness is his real nature. We simply need to attend to making ourselves ready and the rest is automatic. Therefore it was not enough for the sadhaka (aspirant) to know that his teaching was sublime and his presence inspiring; it was necessary to know that he was a Guru giving diksha (initiation) and upadesa (instruction). That Guru comes only to tell him ‘That God is within yourself. Why do you pay attention to it. The initiation by silence was equally real. Ask him, does he want me to give him a written document? ashrama@arunachala.org, NOVA SCOTIA In the centre of the cavity of the Heart the sole Brahman shines by itself as the atman (Self) in the feeling of ‘I’-‘I’. As each thought arises one must be watchful and ask to whom is this thought occurring. The thought ‘who am I?’ will destroy all other thoughts, and like the stick used for stirring the funeral pyre, it will itself be burnt up in the end. Reach the Heart by diving within yourself, either with control of breath, or with thought concentrated on the quest of Self. Canada B0S 1C0 As each thought arises, one should inquire with alertness, “To whom has this thought arisen?” The answer that would emerge would be “to me”. Dive within and realize’. Both are the result of the mind. Bh. One is to enquire for whom is this destiny and discover that only the ego is bound by destiny and not the Self and that the ego is non-existent. So, that happiness must lie in one. Also he does not say that he has disciples, for, being beyond otherness, there can be no relationship for him. Thus, when the mind stays in the Heart, the ‘I’ which is the source of all thoughts will go, and the Self which ever exists will shine. The truth is that no one can give us liberation. Where there is not the slightest trace of the ego, there is the Self. Freewill and destiny last as long as the body lasts. If the mind, which is the instrument of knowledge and is the basis of all activity, subsides, the perception of the world as an objective reality ceases. It is axiomatic that one who is a Guru in this supreme sense of having realized his identity with the Absolute does not say so, inasmuch as there is no ego left to affirm the identity. The obstacle is the mind. To attain that natural happiness one must know oneself. Peace, joy and immortality are available to those aspirants who dedicate themselves to the practice of meditation and Self-enquiry and devotion. If you go out as sanyasi (ascetic), a similar thought that you are a sanyasi will haunt you. Other than inquiry, there are no adequate means to make the mind permanently subside. God, Guru and the Self are the same. That which rises as ‘I’ in the body is the mind. It is no use complaining of the niggardliness of the ocean; the bigger the vessel the more he will be able to carry. The original set of questions was asked by Sivaprakasam Pillai which was later presented by Ramana Maharshi in prose form. For that, Self-Enquiry, ‘Who am I?’ is the chief means. He can only be That. (902) 665-2090, The Founding of Nova Scotia Arunachala Ashrama. The Self is beyond knowledge and ignorance. 86-06 Edgerton Boulevard Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu 606 603 It is generally agreed that Realization is possible only through the Grace of a Guru. What is required is that we cease to spoil it. It creates the body and the world and makes you think you are a grihastha . It is immaterial to him as to how, where and when he leaves the body. All that one gives to others one gives to one’s self. Further, that happiness is daily experienced by everyone in sleep when there is no mind. We know that the train carries all loads, so after getting on it why should we carry our small luggage on our head to our discomfort, instead of putting it down in the train and feeling at ease? The original set of questions was asked by Sivaprakasam Pillai which was later presented by Ramana Maharshi in prose form. The quintessence of Ramana Maharshi’s teaching is found in a small booklet called ‘Who am I?’ This little booklet contains the first set of instructions given by Ramana Maharshi. Hence there is no thought of death or suffering.” The full teaching may be downloaded here “Who Am I?”. But that makes no difference to their jnana. Complete effacement of the ego is necessary to conquer destiny, whether you achieve this effacement through self-enquiry or bhakti marga (Path). In that state there are no individuals other than the Eternal Existence. An English disciple, Major Chadwick, kept a record of such an assurance given to him in the year 1940: Ch. Must I go and look for some Guru in order to receive initiation seeing that Bhagavan says he is not a Guru? Your efforts can be made even now – in whatever environment you are now. Similarly, unless the illusory nature of the perception of the world as an objective reality ceases, the vision of the true nature of the Self, on which the illusion is formed, is not obtained. However bad other people may be, one should bear no hatred for them. (Sitting straight up, turning to the interpreter and speaking with great emphasis). I have not said that a Guru is not necessary. Thereupon if one inquires “Who am I?” the mind will go back to its source; and the thought that arose will subside. When he reaches a certain stage and becomes fit for enlightenment, the same God whom he was worshipping comes as Guru and leads him on. If one has realized, he is that which alone is, and which alone has always been. Before that I could not stand his gaze for long.
